How to Write a Resume - Packet

Resume Checklist

Required Sections:


  • Make sure your name stands out by bolding and making it larger
  • Include things such as your phone number, address, email address, or Linkedin profile, etc...(Does not need to include all of these)
  • Make sure your email address is professional sounding

Qualification Summary:

  • Use 4-6 bullet points to highlight why your are a good fit for the job
  • Professional summary of qualifications
  • Make sure to use action verbs


  • Include your degree before your school
  • Include graduation date even if it is in the future
  • Optional items to include: GPA, related courses, academic achievements


  • List experience in reverse chronological order
  • Include job title, company name, dates of employment, and location
  • Make sure to describe accomplishments and relevant skills
  • Use action verbs
  • include any relevant statistics or quantitative information

Optional Sections:

Relevant Skills:

  • List skills that would be an asset in the field that you are applying for
  • Include expertise in specific skills if appropriate

Leadership/Volunteer Experience:

  • List skills gained that would be an asset in the field that you are applying for

General Guidelines:

  • Use the same margins on all 4 sides (Recommended 1” x 1”)
  • Usually not longer than one page for students and recent graduates
  • Use one legible Serif font throughout (ex. Times New Roman, Century)
  • Make sure that important information stands out
  • Bring your resume to the Career Center for review
