Parent & Family Orientation

Parent & Family Orientation offers two short orientations during Move-in day. This is an opportunity to learn about the exciting new experiences that await your student as they enter . Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged, but not required, to attend this exciting day.

By attending Parent & Family Orientation, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the resources available to SUU students and parents
  • Feel more connected to the University
  • Be better prepared to support and empower your student
  • Understand the University's academic expectations

Move-In Day (8 AM - 5 PM) - Move-in is strongly encouraged for both on-campus and off-campus students. SUU will offer many additional activities for you and your student to participate in.

Parent Orientation (10 AM or 2 PM) - Please join us at one of these times for valuable information on supporting your college student and an introduction to SUU. Orientation will be held in the Sharwan Smith Student Center- English sessions will be held in the Sterling Church Auditorium, Spanish sessions will be held in the Starlight Room.

Info Sessions and "Get it Done" Fair (3 PM - 5 PM) - Campus services and colleges will host an info session for you to get a feel for student life. Local providers of utility services, internet, and phone will also be on campus to help students get connected with the services they need. You will have the chance to attend these with your student. This will take place in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Convention Center and Centrum Concourse.

President’s Dessert Party (7 - 8 PM) - (optional) Parents and students are invited to meet the President, his Cabinet, and the Academic Deans in this open reception at the President’s home.

Parent Goodbyes/Thunder U Check-in (9 - 11 AM) - At check-in students will be added to their Tavi student groups. We ask that you plan on saying your goodbyes at or before this time.

First Time College Student Parent Reception (9 - 11 AM) - Admission is free but RSVP is strongly encouraged. This event will be held in the Gerald R. Sherratt Library Reading Room.

New Student Induction (11 AM - 12 PM) - Parents will have a reserved section of the Centrum arena to watch as their students are inducted into the incoming class.

(12 - 1 PM) - High-five your student as they cross under the Carter Carillon Bell Tower. This is a long held tradition of SUU. They won’t pass under the Bell Tower again until their graduation day. It is pretty inspiring, so bring some tissues & cheer your student on.

Parent Weekend - For the whole family, you won’t want to miss this fun-filled weekend that takes place during the SUU Homecoming celebration!
