SUU is located in the world’s best backyard. Thanks to its close proximity to several outdoor recreation destinations and educational partnerships with the National Park Service, SUU is the only designated University of the Parks in the U.S. Within reasonable distance, students enjoy spectacular hiking, biking, water recreation and once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventures.

National Outdoor Champions

The Outdoor Nation On Campus Challenge declared SUU as this year's winner, awarding SUU with the coveted title of The Most Outdoorsy School in the nation. Winning the competition, which was sponsored by Outdoor Nation, REI and The North Face, further validates and solidifies as the University of the Parks.

Academic Focus

SUU uses its unique location to create a strong academic atmosphere where students do not simply read names of plants and rock structures out of the book, but are given the chance to see these wonders up close. Thunderbirds can study geology, biology, archeology, environmental psychology, and outdoor recreation. Everything students learn is augmented with hands-on experiential learning opportunities.

Semester in the Parks

Semester in the Parks creates a once-in-a-lifetime experience for students to study, live and work in  Bryce Canyon National Park. Students take 16-credits from experienced faculty with classes that include outdoor recreation, geology, communication, biology and library science.

Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative (llC)

The llC is a partnership between SUU, Land Management Agencies and native American Tribes of the southern Utah, northern Arizona and eastern Nevada. The llC coordinates of 300 internships opportunities providing students with "real world" work experience that can complement their academic pursuits and help prepare them for a successful career.

SUU Day in the Parks

SUU celebrated the National Park Centennial on August 25, 2016 by inviting all students, faculty and staff to participate in SUU Day in the Parks. This institutional-wide effort encouraged visits to the Parks for alternative and enriching educational experiences. With 100 free university-sponsored trips and experiences more than 4,500 students enjoyed their Day in the Parks.
